This chapter describes an interesting intersection between the movement of religion into the domestic sphere and how industrial age development contributed to ease of travel. These two things impacted women’s desire and ability to become involved in charity work. For middle class white women, public philanthropy was a way to assert themselves independent of husband and family, and a way to exhibit moral superiority, leading to the “white women’s burden” of helping the less well-off.
