I have so many questions from that episode of Invisibilia. I also was struck by what seemed to be a vast difference between the potential cost to each of the women of the relationship. I think even before we heard the other lady was spying, I was feeling uncomfortable with the way the needs of the American lady seemed to be elevated in this secret relationship. I really value what we can learn from anthropology, but it seems to me that sometimes the means used to learn things could undermine and/or endanger l the very people and culture you’re seeking to understand - is the cost worth it? When is it worth it? Who decides?
